Do you do the jump out exercise to both arms or just the throwing arm
How many sets and repititions do you do for this?
Hey Mike,
While restoring symmetry is certainly a major focus of ours in asymmetrical sports like baseball…this particular exercise is usually just performed on the throwing arm. This one is done to teach the throwing arm how to decelerate so that it can take the “governor” off the upper limit arm speed and acceleration. Since we are most concerned with the arm that throws the baseball in this case…this exercise is one of the exceptions…focusing just on the throwing arm.
Hey Steve,
It is best to perform 3 sets of 6-10 repetitions on your throwing arm….two times per week (usually performed when doing your rotator cuff or scap stabilization work). The key is to perform each set with good form. Use a heavy enough band that it actually pulls your arm into the follow through position. You have to “fight” the pull and decelerate the motion to get the maximum benefit from this exercise! Jeff
Ok thanks Jeff
Hey,
is this just for pitchers, or will ot help cathcers?
Jacob….that’s a great question! This definitely will help a catcher, or even a shortstop or outfielder. Anyone looking to throw harder should be doing shoulder deceleration training. Hang in there too Jacob, I have had a catching training program in the back of my mind for quite some time now. I think I might be putting that on paper soon! Jeff
